On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of Sino-Swiss diplomatic relations, Sinfonieorchester Basel toured China once again. On March 23rd and 25th, 2015, the orchestra staged performances in respectively Beijing Forbidden City Concert Hall and Shanghai Oriental Art Center. Under the baton of chief conductor Dennis Russell Davis, the orchestra presented a strong classical program with multi-faceted works, ranging from 19th century classical period to 20th contemporary time, including Mozart’s Symphony No.32 in G Major, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.3 in C Minor, Stravinsky's The Firebird, and Song Ruin, composed by the famous contemporary Chinese composer Chen Yi.
A definite highlight of the concerts was the performance of Pianist Fazil Say, who starred with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.3 in C minor and received thunderous applause for the encore of his own composition Black Earth.
Besides Fazil Say’s encore of Black Earth, in the first half of the concert, the audience was very much amused by the encore of Wettstein Marsch. This piece, by Swiss composer Herman Suter, is often played during carnival and the orchestra surprised the audience with two musicians entering the stage in extravagant costumes. As homage to Chinese music, the concerts finally came to an end with the encore pieces GoodNews from Beijing Spreads Borderland and Jasmine.
