From July 24th to August 12th 2013, praised by Times as bringing back magic to the world stages, the Black Light Theatre Srnec toured China once again. This time, with their new production Flying Bicycle, they gave ten excellent performances in Beijing, Xi’an, Dalian and Shanghai.

Flying Bicycle tells a story about dreams and love. A young inventor is addicted to the structure of wings and tries to invent a flying bicycle. It turns out that only true love can make the bicycle fly. This new production is like a magical fairy tale with unique stage effects, such as pretty angels dropping from the sky, a puppy toy who starts talking and a retro clock dancing in the air. These are all the fascination of black light theatre. Not only children, but also adults enjoy this extremely funny performance with original design and attractive, dramatic and fantastic stage effects.

This year, the Black Light Theater Srnec was part of the yearly children theme plays exhibitions of “Chunmiao Event”, promoted by Beijing Municipal Cultural Bureau. Flying Bicycle was also the only foreign performance of “The Sixth Children’s Drama Arts Season” of National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). In addition, as part of the NCPA summer camp, the children had the opportunity to play with the artists and attributes of the Black Light Theater, after the performance. Last but not least, the Black Light Theatre Srnec performed in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Natural History Museum’s “When Science Meet Art—Drama Week”, and won great praises from the audience.

“Celebration of human fantasy and dreams, in contrast with today’s hasty world around us, is the essence of black light theatre.” This is the belief of Jiri Srnec, the founder of the Black Light Theatre Srnec. Jiri Aster Srnec, the current head of this company, led his during this excellent China tour. When interviewed by the China Radio International (CRI), Jiri Aster Srnec mentioned: “We are looking forward to performing in China each year to make more audience familiar with our troupe and the Czech culture.”
