Established in 1952, the China National Opera House is one of the most distinctive opera companies in the Asia-Pacific region, hosting a prominent cast and a singular production team. The opera troupe gathers many outstanding artists, most of whom have won major competitions both in and out of China and are very active on the international stage.

CNOH owns a team of prominent composers, conductors, directors, playwrights and stage designers.

The stage design department is one of the Opera‘s strong points. In addition to the high quality accomplishment of yearly works for the group, the stage design team also participated in the set designs for gala performances and events in China and abroad.

In 2009, it staged a Turandot production in the National Stadium of China, attracting over 100,000 guests within two days.

President, Artistic Director & Chief Conductor: Feng Yu

Prof. Feng Yu is the President, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the China National Opera House. As an opera conductor, Yu Feng has successfully worked with the major symphony orchestras in China, including China Philharmonic Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra.

Yu is also in constant demand as a guest conductor for renowned orchestras abroad such as Philharmonic of the Nations (Germany), Naples Philharmonic Orchestra (Italy), Gulbenkian Orchestra (Portugal), New Philharmonia Orchestra and many more.

Program: Turandot

The opera Turandot was first introduced to China by China National Opera House in 1989. On May 1, 1998, Turandot was performed publicly in Taiwan for the music season of Taipei. In October 2008, CNOH sent a 191-member performance group to Egypt to perform Turandot at the invitation of Cairo Opera House. Turandot attracted over 5 000 audience in four performances.

In 2009, CNOH in collaboration with famous director Zhang Yimou, presented Turandot as one of the key performances of International Opera Season of CNOH in the China National Stadium which is also known as the Bird’s Nest. The performance gathered 100 000 audiences in two days. From May 6 to 8, 2010, at the invitation of Syria National Opera House, CNOH visited the capital of Syria, Damascus with Turandot, which attracted over 4 000 audiences in Dar al-Assad for Culture and Arts in three days.

On October 1, 2012, Turandot presented by CNOH gave the Italian audiences an unprecedented experience in the Auditorium Conciliazione of Roma. In August 2015, CNOH visited Italy again and performed Turandot in the Puccini Festival. At the same time, CNOH participated in the Ljubljana Summer Festival in Slovenia.

The performance of Turandot by CNOH not only faithfully delivers the original work of the opera master Puccini, but also integrates unique oriental features of China.
