From 24 June to 1 July, the Berliner Philharmoniker graced the stage in Shanghai, captivating audiences under the baton of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Kirill Petrenko, alongside the prestigious pianist Yuja Wang. This remarkable residency marked the orchestra's fourth visit to the city, ending a seven-year hiatus. The "Berliner Philharmoniker 2024 in Shanghai", part of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival attracted over 20,000 participants, undoubtedly establishing a cultural exchange phenomenon in 2024. The residency included four orchestra concerts at the Shanghai Grand Theatre with works by Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, Modest Mussorgsky, Maurice Ravel and Richard Wagner as part of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival. Yuja Wang was the soloist in Sergei Prokofiev’s First Piano Concerto and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. There were also seven chamber concerts throughout the city with various Philharmoniker ensembles, ranging from string quartets to brass ensembles. Education and outreach events included an open dress rehearsal, concert introductions, public masterclasses, school visits and encounters both with the China Shanghai International Arts Festival Youth Art Troupe and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. The Berliner Philharmoniker attached great importance to direct interaction with the musical and social life of Shanghai. |
