WDR Sinfonieorchester successfully embarked on its 2024 China tour from April 6 to April 21. The tour consisted of six stops, performing at the Tianjin Grand Theatre, National Centre for the Performing Arts, Xi'an Concert Hall, Chengdu City Concert Hall, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, and Guangzhou Xinghai Concert Hall. Notably, the tour concluded with a legendary "marathon performance" on April 20, where under the baton of chief conductor Cristian Măcelaru, the orchestra accomplished the challenge of performing four Brahms symphonies in a single day at the Xinghai Concert Hall due to severe weather conditions leading to a rescheduled concert, resulting in the first-ever "Brahms Symphony Complete Marathon Concert" on the Chinese mainland. This marked the first time the orchestra and conductor Cristian Măcelaru undertook such a challenge, creating a historic musical moment for the ensemble!
Approximately 8,000 audience members participated in this unforgettable musical journey, listening to the German orchestra's passionate interpretation of Brahms. In addition to the captivating concert performances, the WDR Sinfonieorchester engaged with Chinese music enthusiasts through various outreach activities such as open rehearsals, masterclasses, and interviews, fostering closer interactions with their fans in China.
